Summer’s pesky party killer- Mosquitoes.

July 15, 2019

Just the mention of the word mosquito and you begin to itch. These carnivores can uproot a picnic, BBQ, or outdoor celebration. Their life span is a short two weeks to six months but that is more than enough time to spread disease and even death.

Mosquitoes Transmitting Diseases

We have all heard about the Zika Virus transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, and the transmission of Malaria via the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito. The West Nile virus, various types of Encephalitis and canine heart worms are diseases present in the U.S and pose real threats to us and our canine companions. This does not minimize the annoyance of mosquitoes in our yards and summer activities. Diseases transmitted by mosquitoes are a real problem.

According to National geographic:

Mosquito-borne diseases cause millions of deaths worldwide every year with a disproportionate effect on children and the elderly in developing countries.

There are more than 3,000 species of mosquitoes, but the members of three bear primary responsibility for the spread of human diseases. Anopheles mosquitoes are the only species known to carry malaria. They also transmit filariasis (also called elephantiasis) and encephalitis. Why do mosquitoes bite me and not other people?

Mosquito bites!

Mosquitoes can be drawn to certain people based on their body odor or smells and body temperature. Some theories suggest they are drawn to certain blood types and chemicals that your body releases. But their radar skill of choice to find a victim is plain old carbon dioxide. The exhale of your breath alerts them to a possible meal.

Or maybe you are just too sweet!

PS: only females bite and feed on people and warm-blooded animals.

What can I do to eliminate mosquitoes from my home and garden?

Standing water is a haven for mosquitoes.

Keep it clean– plain and simple. Mosquitoes love water and damp dark areas of debris.

  • Remove standing, stagnant water wherever possible.
  • Do not leave yard waste or dead foliage rotting in your yard and around your home.
  • Check to ensure your screens are in good condition and there are not entry points near windows or doors.
  • Remove old junk and properly dispose of trash and garbage.
  • Display some plants that repel mosquitoes: eucalyptus, mint, lavender, and marigolds!

Treatments on a regular basis are critical. At Accurate Pest Control, we provide fogging services to your yard and brush perimeter and/or dense landscaping. It is recommended to perform this service in regular intervals throughout the summer months, perhaps monthly.

We offer organic treatments as well.

Having an outdoor event or party? We can also do one-time foggings to help reduce the population before an event. We can also install dunks into bodies of water if applicable. Our technicians will review safe treatment options with you.
